Angri (SA): from wetland restoration to a green barrier against pollution. The double project supported by La Doria for biodiversity and the community
The initiative, part of the national Mosaico Verde campaign promoted by AzzeroCO2 and Legambiente, led to the planting of a total of 500 trees, with the aim of enhancing the area’s natural capital.
Angri, 18 December 2025 – A dual environmental regeneration project has been completed in Angri, involving the restoration of an 8,000-square-metre peri-urban wetland north of the city and the creation of a green anti-pollution barrier at the III Circolo Didattico – Taverna School Complex.
The initiative was made possible thanks to the support of La Doria – a leading European group in the supply of Italian private label specialties, including tomatoes, ready-made sauces, pulses and pasta – and a key reference company for the local area. The project is part of Mosaico Verde, the national campaign for the restoration of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, environmental regeneration and urban forestry promoted by AzzeroCO2 and Legambiente.
The project initially focused on the wetland area, an ecosystem of great ecological value whose potential had been limited by the presence of dense reed beds. The goal was to transform this space into a more complex and resilient habitat.
The first phase involved the removal of the reeds and the restoration of the natural basin, laying the groundwork for the revival of a richer and more diverse environment. This was followed by the planting of 400 native trees, including Lombardy poplars, to regenerate the area. At a later stage, the Municipality plans to install urban furnishings to make the space accessible and usable for the community.
The restoration of the wetland will generate significant benefits for the area, with positive impacts on multiple fronts. Over time, the site may become a biodiversity hotspot, as wetlands host a wide variety of plant and animal species. In addition, it will contribute to climate change mitigation, thanks to the ability of these ecosystems to store carbon. Finally, it will act as a natural water purification system, with vegetation and soil functioning as a biological filter capable of retaining sediments and pollutants, thereby improving water quality.
Commenting on the initiative, Cosimo Ferraioli, Mayor of Angri, said: “What was once a dense reed bed is being transformed into a complex ecosystem that will once again perform essential ecological functions. The green barrier at the Taverna School Complex also reflects a clear vision: combining environmental quality with educational quality. Our children deserve to grow and learn in environments protected from noise and air pollution, where nature is an integral part of their educational journey. I would like to thank La Doria for reaffirming its strong local roots through this important contribution, and AzzeroCO2 and Legambiente for their professionalism and technical expertise in implementing the project. These 500 trees represent a legacy for future generations of Angri residents – a natural capital that will multiply over time, generating environmental, social and economic benefits for the entire city.”
At the same time, 100 new trees were planted in the garden of the nursery and primary school at the III Circolo Didattico – Taverna School Complex. As they grow, these trees will form a natural screen to mitigate noise and air pollution from the adjacent road.
La Doria had already contributed to the Mosaico Verde national campaign in 2023, with an initiative that led to the planting of 1,000 trees across the Campania region.
Antonio Ferraioli, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of La Doria, stated: “We are proud to have renewed our support for Mosaico Verde with this project in the Municipality of Angri, further strengthening our concrete commitment to environmental protection and the enhancement of the territory. La Doria has deep roots in Angri, where the company was founded and where it continues to invest to create shared value. Supporting initiatives like this means turning our corporate vision – long rooted in environmental and social sustainability – into tangible actions, contributing to the protection of biodiversity and the improvement of quality of life for the community. The regeneration of natural spaces and the enhancement of educational environments represent a concrete way of giving back to the territory part of what it offers us every day, in line with a responsible, long-term development model.”
This dual intervention represents a concrete step towards the sustainable development of the city of Angri and a direct investment in the quality of life of its citizens. Nature thus becomes a central element of the urban fabric, offering tangible ecological benefits and new opportunities for community engagement.
“Giving space back to nature within our territories is one of the most important challenges for our future. Every regeneration initiative is an investment in the stability of ecosystems, making them stronger and better prepared to face upcoming environmental challenges,” commented Sandro Scollato, CEO of AzzeroCO2. “Thanks to the partnership with La Doria in Angri, we have rebuilt a piece of natural capital. This is not a static project, but a living system whose ecosystem value will continue to grow over time, strengthening the health of the local environment.”
Salvatore Abate, President of the Legambiente Angri Local Chapter, added: “For the city of Angri, this project represents a positive example of co-design – a fundamental approach for sharing territorial regeneration pathways with citizens, especially in areas at risk of natural degradation. Our goal is to promote the creation of natural infrastructure in Angri to support sustainable territorial development and raise awareness of challenges such as climate change, energy transition and sustainable mobility.”
